Stephens Lake Park was built on 110 acres of land purchased by the city of Columbia from Stephens College in 2001, affording the people of the city a public park attached to the Broadway, the main thoroughfare through downtown.
Heather and Kolton Carmichael walk along the main path at Stephens Lake Park on a cool spring day on March 18, 2010 in Columbia, Mo. Rather than let developers divide up the property, the people of Columbia chose to purchase the land in 2001, and transformed it into the largest park in the city.
